ABOUT
The title refers directly to Sir George Grey, one of early New Zealand's most prominent and influential Governors.
In 1882, Grey formally declared his intent to gift his vast personal collection—thousands of rare manuscripts, historical documents, Māori artifacts, and first-edition books—to the citizens of Auckland. This monumental collection formed the baseline foundation of the public library system when the primary civic building opened its doors.
Written by Wynne Colgan, who served as the Deputy City Librarian of the Auckland Public Library system from 1954 to 1982.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images and drawings.
