Documents the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Hawke's Bay region on February 3, 1931.
With an official death toll of 256 people, the disaster completely leveled the commercial centers of Napier and Hastings. The text and extensive archival photographs detail the initial tremors, the fires that subsequently swept through the ruined towns, and the immediate rescue operations coordinated by residents and the Royal New Zealand Navy.
