ABOUT
A powerful primary source and eyewitness account of the events leading up to the Invasion of the Waikato in 1863.
The book tracks the mid-19th-century origins of the Kīngitanga (the Māori King Movement), established in the 1850s to unify Māori tribes, halt the widespread loss of land to European settlers, and establish a framework for indigenous self-governance. Gorst profiles pivotal early figures like Pōtatau Te Wherowhero (the first Māori King) and the master political strategist Wiremu Tamihana (known as the Kingmaker).
Gorst arrived in the Waikato in 1860 as a magistrate and Civil Commissioner. Governor George Grey tasked him with establishing a state-backed school, court, and a Māori-language newspaper (Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke) to counter the Kīngitanga’s independent press (Te Hokioi).
Includes monochrome images, drawings and map.
