ABOUT
An interesting, and now scarce, chapter in New Zealand's rail history.
This narrow gauge tramway was eight miles of track, with inclines, linking a coalmine with a Government branch line at Mount Somers. Line later widened to standard gauge. During its 50 years of operation the rail carried other mineral freights and commodities. However, the mineral riches expected never fully eventuated and this example of local initiative faced dwindling demand and was eventually closed.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and maps, illustrated end papers.
