ABOUT
A first-hand compilation of personal stories, profiles, and historical sketches documenting the earliest European settlers and social development of the Otago Province during its foundational years.
Written by James Barr under the pseudonym "An Old Identity".
In 19th-century New Zealand, the phrase "Old Identities" referred to the original 1848 Scottish Presbyterian settlers who arrived on the first immigrant ships, such as the John Wickliffe and Philip Laing.
Barr's work is a valuable archival resource capturing the social, political, and economic challenges faced by early colonial families. Notably, it features the early works of James Brown, who is widely considered New Zealand's first political cartoonist.
