The 1982-1985 Geothermal Monitoring Programme and Task Force in Rotorua revealed that increased geothermal fluid extraction from wells led to a decline in natural surface activity, including geyser eruptions and spring flows. A subsequent well closure program in 1987 significantly reduced fluid withdrawal, resulting in a noticeable recovery of many surface features and a rise in aquifer pressure.
