ABOUT
John Jones was a Sydney-born entrepreneur who owned one of the largest fleets of ships under the Sydney register.
Initially, he capitalised on the dying days of the whaling industry in the 1830s, and then in 1843 he moved to New Zealand and continued to develop the agricultural settlement he had set up in 1840 at Whakouaiti, just north of Dunedin.
Jones moved permanently to Dunedin in 1854, following the 1848 establishment of the Otago settlement. There he continued to invest in shipping ventures. From the mid-1860s he controlled much of the ferry traffic on Otago Harbour, and he also sought to develop coastal services in and out of Dunedin.
He died in 1869, but his Harbour Steam Company partnership continued and became the nucleus of the enterprise which, six years later, became the Union Steam Ship Company.
