Veronica Volkersz was one of only 166 female WWII Air Transport Auxiliary pilots. She qualified as a pilot in 1939, joining the ATA in 1941 as a 1st Officer, later promoted to Flight Captain and qualified to fly all single and twin-engined aircraft types. She is also notable for her regular post-war military contract flying and for being the first woman anywhere in the world to pilot an operational jet fighter.
