ABOUT
Two volumes of a late nineteenth-century account of New Zealand's then young history, generally considered to the first scholarly history of these islands.
A.S. Thomson was a prominent military surgeon who served in New Zealand during a period of relative peace, and completed this work and a work on the health of the Maori. His views on Maori and their society reflect very much the colonial mindset, and do not show a genuine attempt at understanding the Maori.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome drawings.
