ABOUT
Frank Evans, aged 29, was a wartime merchant seaman, but gave up his job of second mate on a passenger ship to study marine biology at Queen Mary College, London.
He conceived the "Petula" expedition in bed one night and still startles his wife with ideas of unorthodox oceanographical research in distant waters. He has sailed in all kinds of boats from tankers to college "eights", and is now engaged in research on the results of the "Petula" Atlantic crossing.
His companions on the expedition were Dick Dickson and Roland Sharma. Dick Dickson is a 35-year-old New Zealander who spent some years in Fiji and Samoa with the New Zealand meteorological service.
