Detailing the harrowing realities of Scott’s tragic Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole (1910–1913).
While the book covers the three-year expedition, the title specifically refers to a mid-winter side-trip in July 1911. Cherry-Garrard, Edward Wilson, and Henry "Birdie" Bowers trekked 60 miles in total darkness and temperatures as low as −60°C from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier.
Cherry-Garrard was part of the support team that laid depots for Scott's march to the South Pole. He was one of the last people to see Scott, Wilson, Bowers, Lawrence Oates, and Edgar Evans alive.
Their goal was scientific: to collect Emperor penguin eggs to test an evolutionary theory that penguins were the "missing link" between dinosaurs and birds.
