Thomas Cawthron was a Nelson pioneer who arrived in 1849. He became a successful businessman charitable patron of the City of Nelson. He died in 1915, and his will set out the terms for the "purchase of land and the construction and maintenance of an industrial and technical school, institute and museum, to be called the "Cawthron Institute", which opened in 1921 becoming one of New Zealand's most distinguished scientific and research establishments, particularly in the field of agriculture and primary production.
Illustrated with monochrome images, maps on end papers.
