Twice the Governor 1845-53 and 1861-68 during the land wars, and finally prime minister in 1877. Grey's early career was spent in the Australian outback defending the Aborigines. He then became governor of South Australia. His first governorship of New Zealand was judged outstanding. His second governorship was a disaster as it fuelled the Maori Wars and his marriage collapsed in scandal.
