ABOUT
A history of the Totara Estate near Oamaru which played a leading role in establishing the frozen meat trade by shipping carcases to Britain in 1882.
Documents the history of Totara Estate, a massive agricultural station established in the 1850s and located just south of Oamaru in North Otago. Before the 1880s, New Zealand sheep farming was restricted to wool production, resulting in thousands of older sheep being discarded as waste because there was no way to export meat across the globe.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images.
