ABOUT
A fictional story set against the facts of war, written while the author was on the march from Alamein to Tripoli, October 1942 to January 1943.
All the characters in this book are, in part at least, the product of my imagination. All the incidents have a foundation in fact though they concern half a hundred different New Zealand units. It was written mostly between October 1942 and January 1942 on the march from Alamein to Tripoli, scribbled in dust storms behind the doubtful protection of a 'bivvy' tent; during march halts, often under shell-fire, sandwiched between fire orders, and corrected after dusk by the dim light of a truck lamp.
