A softcover photographic souvenir pictorial collection that preserves early engravings and photographs of the city's formative decades of European settlement.
Many illustrations come from Samuel Charles Brees, a surveyor and artist who worked for the New Zealand Company in the 1840s.
Combines early drawings with later photographs including:
> Views of Petone (Pito-one) beach where the first British settlers arrived in 1840.
> Early shots of Lambton Quay and Thorndon before major land reclamation and the transformative 1855 earthquake.
> Early tracks, simple cottages, and the gradual growth of the port
