When, in 1766, Captain Samuel Wallis sailed the Dolphin out from Plymouth Sound on the voyage which was to culminate in the discovery of Tahiti, he took with him a measuring rod for measuring such giants as he might encounter in the Southern Hemisphere. The rod, though it proved redundant at the time, now gives us a clue by which to gauge the scale of his adventure.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome find line drawings, including title page.
