The son of a missionary, he managed to rise through various government positions to become a prosperous lawyer, an authority in ornithology, and a gentleman of influence - with an obsession for honours, both in New Zealand and in England. He also earned some notoriety in his practice of Maori land law, and in the bitter struggle over his cherished Papaitonga estate in the Manawatu.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and monochrome and colour drawings.

Near new with only light shelf wear on dust jacket and a few marks on end papers. Images depict all need to know detail.
