Politician, historian, poet, newspaper editor, socialist and banker - William Pember Reeves is one of the most influential figures in New Zealand history. He wrote the country's first socialist pamphlet and helped to found its first modern political party. In the Liberal Government, in the years 1891-96, he was the first Fabian socialist to hold cabinet office, though doctrinaire socialism had little influence on his comprehensive labour legislation, which has continued to shape the development of New Zealand society to the present day. While emphasizing his political career, this biography explores the whole course of Reeves's life from 1857 to 1932.
Based on his unpublished 'memoirs', and his other surviving papers, and on letters recently discovered.
