The authentic World War II experiences of Hamish's father, Doug Brown, a New Zealand Spitfire pilot.
Hamish compiled the biography directly from Doug's private wartime letters, diaries, and personal reminiscences. Named after "Wine, Women and Song", one of the actual Spitfire aircraft Doug piloted while serving with the 485 (NZ) Squadron in England.
The narrative captures Doug signing up as a 20-year-old in 1939, his basic training at Levin and Whenuapai, crossing the Pacific to train on single-engine Harvards in Canada, and eventually deploying to active combat operations in the United Kingdom.
It contrasts the intense, dangerous realities of tactical fighter sweeps and losing fellow airmen with the mundane nature of "readiness" boredom, mess pranks, and high-spirited social lives behind the scenes.
