A record of the lives of 41 women in the area of Northern Wairoa in those early days of New Zealand settlement.
It has been said that the farms of the Northern Wairoa were built with the workworn hands of its women; and its children, it may be added. In the beginning, when the main concern was to reap - if wastefully - the wealth contained in the kauri, wives lived spartan lives in bush shanties, and more bore children at frequent intervals throughout their fertile years. And when finally farming was established, they and their children became slaves to the cowshed.
Includes monochrome portraits.
