Originally published in 1930 this is the auto-biography of Austrian Andreas Reischek who in 1877 was sent to New Zealand to assist with the setting up of a museum in Christchurch.
This appointment was to last two years, but it was 12 years before he returned home, with an extensive knowledge of New Zealand's natural history and of the Maori race.
On his voyage to New Zealand he studied English and soon became fluent in the language, even recording most of his observations in it. He was respected and accepted by Maori and European.
