About

The Murray Halberg Story - as told to Garth Gilmour - the man behind the annual New Zealand Murray Halberg Sport Awards.

Halberg is New Zealand's pioneer sub-four-minute miler, world record holder over 3 miles, Olympic 5000 metre champion and twice Empire games 3-mile champion. Never beaten over two miles.

Born in Eketahuna, Halberg later moved to Auckland, where he attended Avondale College. He was a rugby player in his youth, but suffered a severe injury during a game, leaving his left arm withered. The next year, he took up running, seemingly being only more motivated by his disability.

Illustrated throughout with monochrome images.
