About

An account of the author's experiences in Japanese prison camps in Singapore and Java during World War II.

Claude Thompson was a RNZAF pilot in the Second World War. From 8 March 1942 to about 8 September 1945 he was held in Java and Singapore as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese Imperial Army. During his captivity he and thousands of others were subjected to harsh beatings and suffered severe malnutrition and other illnesses. At the same time he was forced to work doing hard labour, including the construction of a railway line and an aerodrome. All prisoners of war suffered hardship and indignities.

This book was written during the 1950 Christmas holidays after Claude's friend ARD Fairburn, insisted that he record his experiences whilst they were still fresh in his mind.

Includes a few monochrome images and drawings.
