About

History of Jackson's Bay on the southern West Coast of New Zealand.

Jackson's Bay on paper looked promising. The only safe harbour on the West Coast; a hinterland that offered plenty of virgin land for a prosperous agriculture, timber in unlimited quantity, and the prospect of rich mineral wealth. In 1874 the Government set aside 26,000 hectares for a State-subsidised "Special Settlement" at Jacksons Bay for immigration, but in the first few months of settlement, from 1875 onwards, things began to go very, very wrong. The survey work was uncompleted, the first 80 families included few who were already adapted to raw pioneer life. By 1884 only a small handful of families, the toughest of the tough, remained on the land to hand it on to the descendants who prosper there today.

Illustrated with monochrome images.
Maps on end papers.
