About

In 1847 Thomas Arnold left England for New Zealand first moving to Wellington and then Nelson.

These previously unpublished letters to his mother and sister, and to his friend J.C. Sharp, give information on early Colonial history in New Zealand, and on the intellectual climate of the mid 19th century New Zealand. Also for the first time in complete form are letters between Thomas Arnold and Arthur Hugh Clough over the years 1847-51.

Illustrated throughout with monochrome fine line illustrations, including drawn portrait on title page. Maps on end papers.
