About

History of Palmerston North.

Known to New Zealanders today and to its increasingly numerous overseas visitors as the urban focus of the prosperous and beautiful Manawatu farmlands; and as a university city of 52,000 inhabitants; and as a model of farsighted planning by enterprising pioneers.

Visitors and even residents seldom pause to consider that the bustling city, the orderly countryside, have been carved out from the great primeval forests that reigned the land until a bare one hundred years ago. How all this was done, and through what dogged persistence, and by what concerted efforts by the pioneers, is here recounted by Dr George Petersen, himself a citizen of Palmerston North for fifty-two years and an historian of the Scandinavian pioneers.

Includes monochrome images and maps.

Illustrated end papers.
