About

A.E. Peaches' diaries, journals and letters, complied by his granddaughter, Constance Gray, paint an authentic picture of day-to-day living on an up-country station in New Zealand in the late 19th century.

Alfred Edward Peache arrived in New Zealand in 1875, at the age of twenty-two, to visit his uncle, C.P. Cox, who with family backing had bought the Mount Somers run near Ashburton. Things were not going well at Mount Somers. Within a few months Percy Cox found he could no longer carry on and the young man, with practically no experience of colonial ways (and without waiting to consult his parents in England), decided to take over a sheep station of more than 12,000 acres and all the problems that went with it.
