About

The brig HMS Osprey was completed at Portsmouth in 1844. Two years later she was wrecked at Herekino on the north west coast of the North Island on NZ.

Initially the small warship was assigned to anti-pirate patrols in South East Asia and then directed to carry out surveys on the NZ coast. Her loss came six months after she arrived, in which time she completed some valued work on inshore waters then inadequately charted. This account of the wreck follows the experiences of the ship's complement after they made it to shore without loss, camped on the beach for almost two months, salvaging as much as possible from the Osprey, them tramping overland to the Bay of Islands.

Illustrated with monochrome images, portrait on title page.
