About

The Ships and Trains that Served Lake Wakatipu originally published in 1963, this edition completely revised and enlarged.

The lure of gold was the initial spur to the development of railway transport to Lake Wakatipu, and of shipping services on the lake itself. As early as 1863, just a year after the discovery of gold, there was a surprising number of vessels in service. Following the gold rush, settlement took place around the lake, Queenstown took form, and gradually the area developed into a popular tourist resort. For more than a hundred years, steamships played their part in serving the isolated communities around the lake shores.

Illustrated throughout with monochrome images and map.
